An interfaith event inspired by the festival of Succot raised £300 for refugees.

The University of Surrey Jewish Society, Islamic Society and Holy Trinity Church Guildford joined forces for a lunchtime food and money collection for refugees last week.

The idea for the collection came about after a discussion on the JSoc’s pop-up succah made them think of the tents and make-shift homes in the Calais refugee camp.

The three faith groups, working with social action group Calais People to People, held a collection on campus. Together they raised over £300, and the appeal for food brought in around £400 worth of food donations. The money will go to providing tents in Calais and support for refugees on the Greek Island of Kos.

The three religious groups are planning future joint actions on refugees and are considering holding a refugee fundraising dinner.

University of Surrey Jewish Chaplain Alex Goldberg said: “It was moving seeing Jewish, Muslim and Christian students and clergy coming together to raise funds for refugees in Calais. Some of those helping were refugees, their children and grandchildren.”
