Years ago, I asked the editor of an Israeli newspaper why Israel never acknowledged that the wellspring of the Arab onslaught against it lay in Islamic extremism.

"We can't allow ourselves to see it that way," came his shocked reply. "We are surrounded by billions of Muslims. Such a thought would be too terrifying." It was far more comfortable, in his case, to blame Israel's policies instead.

Such myopia has now been cruelly exposed, as Israeli Jews are targeted for serial murder in the cause of Islamic holy war. Not that you would know that from the British and American media, exposure to which feels like passing through the looking glass into a mad, nightmarish world. For, if there is one thing even worse than seeing Jews targeted for murder at the hands of those inflamed by demonisation redolent of both Nazi obscenities and the medieval Christian pogroms, it is the contempt for their plight shown by westerners who instead present the Jews' Arab killers as their victims.

Months ago, Palestinian Muslims turned their holy place, al Aqsa Mosque, into a theatre of war from which to hurl rocks, molotov cocktails and other missiles at Jewish worshippers at the Western Wall. Ultra-Orthodox men going to pray were chased and stabbed in images of persecution that we never thought we'd see again. Few in the west did see them, because the media didn't publish them. Since then, Israeli Jews have been under sustained attack from knives, boulders, bullets and bombs.
