Anti-extremist groups are to be given £5 million by the government, David Cameron has announced.

The money will fund campaigns and charities helping to prevent the "seed of hatred being planted in people's minds", he said.

The move is part of the government's counter-extremism strategy to be launched on Monday.

According to Downing Street, the funding will be used to "build a national network of grassroots organisations" to combat the “poison” of extremist idealogy.

There will be practical support to expand the "reach and scale" of groups and promote "credible alternative narratives" to extremist propaganda.

Mr Cameron said: "We need to systematically confront and challenge extremism and the ideologies that underpin it, exposing the lies and the destructive consequences it leaves in its wake.

“We have to stop it at the start – stop this seed of hatred even being planted in people’s minds and cut off the oxygen it needs to grow.”

It is expected that there will be a crackdown on extremism online and at university campuses.
