A teenager who attacked a Jewish teacher with a machete in the south of France is to face terrorism charges for attempted murder.

Benjamin Amsellem was on his way to work in Marseille on Monday morning wearing a kippah when the teen slashed at him with a machete, wounding him in the back and hand. He fell to the ground and protected himself with a book he had with him.

The 15-year-old, who comes from an ethnic Kurdish family, told investigators he was proud of the attack and ashamed that he had not killed the teacher.

Marseille state prosecutor Brice Robin said the teen told police he was acting “in the name of Allah and Islamic State”.
