Rabbi's baby daughter injured in acid attack

The French police suspect antisemitic motive

articlemain

The daughter of a French rabbi was burned after acid was placed in her buggy.

The 14-month old baby was rushed to hospital in the city of Bron, near Lyon after her grandmother noticed the burns on her skin, on Monday according to Le Parisien. She suffered burns on her back and thighs but is not in danger.

The acid had been placed in the pram while it was parked in a communal space inside the grandmother's apartment building overnight. The paper reported that the acid was sprinkled over the inside of the pram. The girl's grandmother was unaware of this when she placed her grandaughter in the pram and was out with her for an hour and a half before noticing the irritation on the baby's skin.

The rabbi, 35, filed a complaint with the police who told Le Parisien that they are looking into a possible antisemitic motive. A police source said: "We take this case very seriously. But, for now, it is still unclear whether this case is an act of antisemitism, a neighborhood quarrel or gratuitous damage committed by thugs".

The pram has been taken by the police as evidence.
