Two of the most mispronounced words of 2017 were in fact Jewish surnames - Gadot (as in Gal) and Weinstein (as in Harvey).
As readers of the JC, you may not find this surprising, and it is something Gadot herself has lamented in the press recently.
The news comes from a list produced by Babbel magazine, published by the language learning app. Babbel spoke to professional subtitlers at the British Institute of Verbatim Reporters, the U.S. Captioning Company, and National Captioning Canada, to find out the most consistently mispronounced words of 2017.
Gadot was number five on the list of the 10 most mispronounced words in the US, and Weinstein was number 10. Their descriptions were as follows:
