It's a question that many JC readers are used to hearing - I know I automatically start to spell out my surname when I'm asked for my name - and one that even supposedly household names take in their stride.
Gal Gadot admitted in an interview for Variety with Big Sick star Kumail Nanjiani, that the question she gets asked all the time is: "how do you pronounce your name?"
The Wonder Woman actress bonded with Nanjiani over their shared experiences. “We’re both immigrants," he said. "We play immigrants in our movies.”
As a result of this, Gadot added: “We both get asked all the time, ‘How do I pronounce your name?’”
In a GQ interview earlier this year Gadot tried to explain how to accurately say her name.
"'I'm, probably 60 percent of the time, still Gadoh,' says Gadot. It is not Gadoh. But it's also not quite Gah-DOTT. Her confusing advice is that the T is pronounced as 'a lighter T...a softer T.'"
In the Variety Actors on Actors interview Gadot and Nanjiani empathised with each other about being unwitting cultural representatives. She said that "immediately once you become famous it goes without saying that you have to hold the flag of the nation."
Nanjiani agreed, saying he tries to do the best that he can but "whether I want to or not I do represent a group, but I can only tell my story...because everyone has a different story".
