Tickets have gone on sale for one of the major events of this autumn’s Balfour 100 celebrations.
The eminent historian Simon Schama will be giving a keynote lecture to mark the centenary of the signing of the Balfour Declaration, the historic document which signalled Britain’s support for a Jewish homeland in Palestine.
The talk, which takes place in central London on November 1, will also be livestreamed, allowing thousands of people around the world to watch.
More than 60 anniversary events have now been arranged across the country. The week-long celebrations will kick off on October 29 with a special service at the New West End Synagogue in London.
One hundred years ago the shul counted Zionist leader Chaim Weizmann and Lord Rothschild, who was the recipient of the Balfour Declaration, among its congregants.
Closing the week will be a Havdalah service at Bevis Marks synagogue.
Tickets for the Schama lecture are available from the Balfour 100 website at http://www.balfour100.com
