Police have arrested two men on suspicion of inciting racial hatred, after antisemitic comments appeared on Twitter following Tottenham Hotspur's match against West Ham United in early October.
According to a police spokesperson: “Haringey CID [Criminal Investigation Department] launched an investigation after they were made aware of the tweets, which were of an antisemitic nature and made reference to Hitler and the gas chambers.”
The unnamed men – a 24-year-old man from Croydon and a 22-year-old from Wiltshire – were taken into custody, and have been bailed until late January.
Another man, a 48-year-old from Canning Town, was arrested on December 5 for inciting racial hatred, and has also been released on bail.
These arrests follow the recent police crackdown on Spurs’ fans in the last few months, after the FA ruled that anyone chanting the word “Yid” could be prosecuted. While the club's supporters refer to themselves as the "Yid army", this has often provoked antisemitic comments from rival fans.
Meanwhile, a Tottenham Hotspur fan who was arrested at the same home game against West Ham United on October 6 finds out if he will be charged next week, after his court appearance last month was delayed.
