The country’s most senior civil judge, Lord Justice Dyson, is to step down at the end of July.
The Times revealed on Monday that Lord Dyson, 73, who holds the position of Master of the Rolls and head of civil justice, is stepping down from the role due to the burden of extensive administrative duties.
In his time as Master of the Rolls, Lord Dyson was a strong advocate for the need to control costs in civil proceedings, criticising the impact of cutting legal aid and increasing court costs.
Appointed to the Supreme Court in 2010, he was the fourth Jewish justice, joining Lord Brown, Lord Collins and Lord Phillips. He took over as Master of the Rolls in 2012, replacing Lord Neuberger who became president of the Supreme Court.
John Dyson, who grew up in Leeds before attending Oxford University, was a chairman of the British Friends of the Hebrew University's legal group.
