The new Supreme Court now has its full complement of 12 justices with the appointment of Lord Justice John Dyson.
An Appeal Court judge since 2001, Lord Justice Dyson, 66, steps into the vacancy left when Lord Neuberger became Master of the Rolls.
Originally from Leeds, the former Sir John Dyson, a popular judge, was a chairman of the British Friends of the Hebrew University's legal group.
Lord Justice Dyson is the fourth Jewish justice, joining Lord Brown, Lord Collins and Lord Phillips
Lord Phillips, president of the Supreme Court, welcomed the appointment. He said: “I much enjoyed working with Sir John in the Court of Appeal and have great admiration for his abilities. I and all the justices look forward to working with him here."
Geoffrey Robertson, QC, told The Times that Lord Justice Dyson was an “outstanding exponent of public law who will be a boon to the Supreme Court’s constitutional jurisprudence”.
Lord Justice Dyson said: “I am honoured and delighted to be appointed as a Justice of the Supreme Court and am excited by the challenge of joining such a distinguished court and the prospect of deciding the most important legal issues of the day.”
The new Supreme Court Justice has sat on a wide range of cases, including one involving Robert Brown, an accountant claiming to be the illegitimate son of the late Princess Margaret.
