'Focus on Israel', SNP MEP tells Parliament

A report by the European Parliament on security concerns in the Middle East has been criticised by an SNP MEP for focusing on Daesh - rather than Israel.

Alyn Smith told MEPs that he was not "entirely satisfied" with last week's report and claimed Israel was a "recruiting sergeant for radicalisation".

"This is a report about the security challenges in the wider region, yet it does focus very much on Daesh. It does mention Daesh 21 times," he said.

"Now, Daesh is, of course, a dreadful organisation but it is one organisation amongst many in a very complex picture. Often, it is as much a symptom as a cause.

"I would personally like to see much more vocal criticism of Israel's action in the region, given that it is a recruiting sergeant for radicalisation."
