Day-Lewis heads Oscar nominations

This could be actor's fourth Oscar

articlemain

Daniel Day-Lewis is in with a chance of winning his fourth best-actor Oscar after being nominated this week.

The Jewish star was named for his role in Phantom Thread, playing a master dressmaker who falls in love with a young waitress in 1950s London.

The 60-year-old has said it will be his last appearance on the big screen, having announced his retirement last year. He has previously won the Best Actor award for My Left Foot (1990), There Will Be Blood (2008) and Lincoln (2013).

Elsewhere, Jewish performers were notable by their absence from the nominations.

Steven Spielberg’s widely praised newspaper drama The Post got a best picture nod but Spielberg himself, perhaps Hollywood’s most admired Jewish name, was shut out of the best director list.

Another apparent shoo-in, James Franco, who has just won a Golden Globe for his turn in The Disaster Artist, went missing on the Academy’s best-actor nomination list.

To add to the disappointments, Foxtrot, Israel’s entry in the Best Foreign-Language Film category, was eliminated after earlier making the shortlist of nine nominees.

However, Call Me By Your Name, which probes the love affair of two young Jewish men in the 1980s, secured four nominations for Jewish talent, including lead actor Timothee Chalamet.

Also named were composers Hans Zimmer for Dunkirk and Benj Pasek, who is up this time for Best Original Song, This Is Me, from the musical The Greatest Showman.
