Prolific Coronation Street scriptwriter and Byker Grove creator Adele Rose has died aged 87.

The Jewish Salford-born TV writer died in hospital on 28 December after contracting pneumonia a week ago, her husband Peter Chadwick said Wednesday.

“She developed pneumonia about a week ago and never got over it. She passed away in the local hospital, where she had the best care,” he told the Chronicle Live.

She received several Writers’ Guild Awards for her work on Coronation Street, penning close to 460 episodes between 1961 and 1998.
