A climate of political correctness and ‘wokery’ helped kill a beloved BBC Radio programme alleges former BBC host Nigel Rees.
In an interview with The Sunday Times, Nigel Rees said that he thought ‘cultural issues’ caused his show, quote…unquote to be cancelled after nearly half a decade on the air.
He cited numerous examples of what he felt was politically correct overreach including when a Jewish mother complained to the show about a Jewish mother joke. Rees told The Sunday Times: “I got a letter from a Jewish mother who objected to a guest telling a Jewish mother joke even though they had a Jewish mother.”
Rees also hit out at other BBC impositions including the ending of all-male panel shows. Whilst not against it in principle, Rees disagrees with the way The BBC implemented diversity initiatives. He said:”we had prescriptions to have diverse groups and disabled guests…it is difficult having it enforced for the sake of it. It is also patronising, not least to the people who don’t want to be on because they feel they are ticking a box.”
