Redbridge Council leader Alan Weinberg is backing a campaign to erect a local memorial to Auschwitz survivor Leon Greenman, who died recently, aged 97.
Councillor Weinberg was responding to calls from Redbridge rabbis and Ilford MPs Lee Scott and Mike Gapes for a fitting tribute to Mr Greenman, who lost his wife, mother-in-law and son in the Polish death camp. After the war, he devoted much of his time to lecturing about the Holocaust, particularly to young people.
Proposals for the memorial include an abstract sculpture in the Peace Park segment of Ilford’s Valentine’s Park.
“I’m happy to support the campaign given Leon’s lifelong contribution to the local community,” Mr Greenman told the JC. “If the community could come up with detailed plans, and the funding, I’m sure the council would give the idea serious consideration.”
