Letter to the JC from Jewish members of Reform UK

Following a Limmud panel discussion warning against falling into the ‘honeytrap’ of right-wing populism, Jewish members of Reform UK penned the joint letter below to the JC

We, the undersigned, are writing as Jewish members of Reform UK to formally address the criticisms levied against our party at the recent Limmud conference in Birmingham, as documented by Gaby Wine in her article dated December 24. These criticisms not only misrepresent our party's values and actions but also require a substantive response to ensure accuracy and fairness in public discourse.

First, let it be unequivocally clear; during the last general election, Reform UK demonstrated its commitment to Jewish representation by fielding many Jewish candidates in key constituencies such as London and Hertsmere, areas known for their significant Jewish populations. This fact alone challenges the narrative that Reform UK does not support Jewish interests, positing instead that our party is diverse and representative.

We must address the remarks made by Mr. Phil Rosenberg, President of the Board of Deputies, regarding future scrutiny of our candidate selection. His selective focus on Reform UK, while ignoring the well-documented issues within his own Labour Party—including candidates who have openly supported anti-Israel activities and failed to address rising antisemitism—raises serious questions about the Board's impartiality. It is noteworthy that the Board's leadership is predominantly affiliated with the Jewish Labour Movement, casting doubt on the objectivity of their critique.

Rabbi David Mason's commentary on the alignment of Reform UK with Judaeo-Christian values is mis-represented. His suggestion that our opposition to certain cultural trends equates to a rejection of Jewish identity is misleading. Reform UK stands against what many term 'wokism', not as an affront to any racial or religious group, but as a critique of prevailing cultural dogmas. Our party's leadership, including our Muslim Chairman, Zia Yusuf, and the selection of candidates from all diverse backgrounds (not just Jewish), directly contradicts any claim of bias against minorities. There is no evidence to suggest that Reform UK discriminates against any religion or race. On the contrary, it is much more about the content of your character through Reform UK’s values of family, community and country.

Furthermore, Lord Mann's broad and arguably misapplied definitions of antisemitism serve to weaponise the term for political gain, particularly against right-leaning entities like Reform UK. In fact we have often stated that Reform UK represents the sensible centre-right view of the majority of the population. Labelling terms like "globalist" or "cultural Marxist" as inherently antisemitic without context or nuance dilutes the real fight against antisemitism, which should be based on clear, evidence-based criteria rather than political convenience.

Our one representative on the London Assembly for Reform UK, Alex Wilson, has been by far the most vocal in the press, in marches and City Hall defending the Jewish position to free the hostages, protect against anti-semitism and stop the hate marches so unlike the article, he has been the Jewish voice for London and UK more widely.

Jewish members and candidates of Reform UK have not only joined the party for their vocal Jewish support but their relevant and sensible policies of low tax, low government involvement, reducing national debt and support for jobs and businesses to grow the economy - relevant for all.

Finally, in the spirit of fostering a balanced and informative dialogue, we propose that Limmud consider including a Jewish member of Reform UK in future discussions related to populism or political movements within the Jewish community. Such inclusion would not only enrich the debate but also ensure that all voices, especially those from within the community, are heard.

We trust this letter provides clarity and invites further constructive dialogue rather than divisive rhetoric.

Sincerely,

Jewish Members of Reform UK

Rael Braverman
