A leading United Synagogue has advised over-70s to stay away from shul to lessen the risks of contracting coronavirus.

In a message to members, joint chairs Danny Kay and Joy Cohen pointed out: “We know there are now cases of covid-19 in neighbouring communities and their synagogue services have been affected.

“We are suggesting, therefore, that in order to try and protect as many of our ‘at risk’ members as we can, that if you are over 70 or have an underlying health condition that may leave you more at risk from this infection, you [should] think about staying away from shul and perhaps davening at home for a period of time.

“This is a purely personal decision. All will be welcome who come to shul. However, we feel it is important that we keep you all informed and engaged during this period.”

They concluded: “In these challenging times, we must pull together as a community. Please do contact us should you or any other members you may be aware of be experiencing particular hardship at this time and we will try to help.”
