A partner in a Manchester law firm will be the new chief executive of the London Board for Shechita.

Avrom Topperman will join the board after the festivals and will be in the post full-time from January. He will work in transition with the outgoing chief executive, Mark Goldwater, who is making aliyah.

Mr Topperman gained a law degree from Manchester University after three years on yeshivot. He joined the law firm, Keoghs, in 2005.

He is a founder member and past chairman of Prestwich Orthodox Jewish Community Council, governors' chair of Manchester Mesivta High School and chair of trustees of the city's Beis Yaacov High School Academy.

He will divide his time between Manchester (which is close to several of the LBS abattoirs) and the board's London offices.

Mr Topperman said the LBS role was "a huge opportunity to serve the Jewish community. I look forward to engaging with our licensees, staff and dayanim.”

Founded in 1804, the  board operates on behalf of the United, Federation and Spanish and Portuguese communities.
