Charity income hits billion

Anglo-Jewish charities collectively enjoy an income of around £1 billion a year, according to the think-tank New Philanthropy Capital.

In a report published last Friday, the organisation found that Jewish charities have a higher median income than other faith groups.

Jewish charities had a median income of £64,871, followed by Sikhs with £57,255 and Quakers with £52,813.

Overall, faith-based charities in England and Wales produced an annual income of £16.3 billion.

While Jewish charities represented 4.65 per cent of the overall number of faith charities, they accounted for 6.19 per cent of the income.

The annual £1bn figure for Jewish charities was almost double the £542 million for the Muslim community and considerably more than for Hindus with £83m and Sikhs £61m.

Christian charities raised £11.2bn, according to the report.

NCP recorded 2,147 Jewish charities compared with 2,054 Muslim ones.

Overall faith-based charities account for 23 per cent of the income of charities in England and Wales.
