The Campaign Against Antisemitism has cancelled its counter-protest against the neo-Nazi demonstration on July 4.
After the police confirmed that the extremist protest was barred from Golders Green and would instead take place in central London, the grassroots group told the JC that its ‘No to Nazis Here or Anywhere’ counter-demonstration - which had signed up 2,300 people - will not take place.
Gideon Falter, chairman of the CAA, said: “We’re not going to counter-protest. What we've asked from the police all along is that they enforce the law as much as possible: moving it out of the area, kettling them and putting a time limit on it.
“They’ve done exactly what we've been asking for for a month now.”
Mr Falter claimed his group was responsible for the neo-Nazi protest being moved and limited, saying: “There’s only one thing that’s brought this about, and that’s that we called thousands of people to come out on to the streets. That’s the one reason. That’s what we think, that we did it. That’s what the police think too.”
He referred to the statement CAA posted on its Facebook page, sent to the group by the Metropolitan Police to explain its decision, which read: “After carefully considering all the facts surrounding this protest and counter-protest activity, including the impact on the Jewish and wider community of Golders Green, it is the assessment of the Metropolitan Police Service that the presence of these groups in the same area at the same time is likely to result in serious disorder, serious disruption to the life of the community and intimidation of others.”
