Radical Muslim cleric Abu Qatada has been found not guilty of terrorism offences by a court in Jordan.

The 54-year-old, once referred to as “Osama Bin Laden’s right-hand man” by a Spanish judge, was cleared of involvement in a plot to target Israelis and Americans during the Millennium celebrations in 2000. According to reports, he was cleared by a panel of civilian judges due to lack of evidence.

Qatada, who was deported from the UK last year, will be released from prison in Jordan, but will not return to London.

Sky News reported a Home Office spokesman saying “he is not coming back to the UK”.

The Palestinian-Jordanian, whose real name is Omar Othman, was deported in July 2013.
