Diego Schwartzman struggled to explain his first-round defeat against Robin Haase.

An upset looked on the cards early on as Schwartzman of Argentina won the opening set 6-2 on Court 5. Haase bounced back to win the next two 6-2, 6-3 before Schwartzman rediscovered his rhythm to win the fourth 6-2. But he was unable to see the match as Haase won an epic contest 7-5 in the fifth.

"It was a tough match,” said Schwartzman. “I started strong and aggressive. But then I don’t know what happened.

"He played well and I made some unforced errors and lost the second and third set. I rallied in the fourth and he took the fifth.

"But I felt I played some good solid tennis from the baseline."

Schwartzman, 23, admits he does not feel at home on the surface at SW19. “It’s tough for an Argentinian to play on grass,” he said. “We don't have any courts to practice and get a better preparation.

"Now I'm going to need to work on improving my focus and play more consistent tennis."
