David Garbacz praised his Hendon team after they moved ominously towards the title with a 2-1 victory over league leaders Redbridge, with Greg Corin scoring another crucial late winner
Dean Nyman gave RJC a deserved lead but a wonder strike from Avi Korman and a winner from Greg Corin cemented three crucial points for Hendon.
RJC dominated the first 25 minutes - they were first to every ball and Steve Summers was proving a real handful up front. Nyman opened the scoring with an excellent finish and Hendon were hanging on, with Garbacz saying: "It was important we didn't concede a second which at that stage was possible". Hendon keeper Russell Corin was in top form throughout, denying RJC on several occasions with some top-notch saves.
Eventually Hendon found their feet and from minute 30 to the final whistle they "took control" and scored two magnificent goals in the second half. Hendon "knew they would tire and we knew our youngsters would find the space later on as the game got more stretched".
And so it proved as Hendon young guns Yoav Kestenbaum Avi Korman and Dave Seitler started to dominate . However, it was the irreplaceable Greg Corin who supplied the brilliant finish in the 88th minute from a mazy Seitler run to set up wild scenes of celebration.
Garbacz told JC Sport: "I'm glad my players don't listen to me though - at half-time I had a go at Avi Korman for shooting from too far out and when he lined up to strike one from 25 yards I was about to let rip again - with the ball nestling in the top corner from a superb pile driver I decided to let him off instead!
"We all knew the importance of this win - Redbridge threw everything at us including a great deal of mouth but we were not to be denied - both teams deserve enormous credit for what was a high quality hugely committed match but the win puts us in a great position and will probably knock the wind out of Redbridge's title challenge. As for us we move on - one big contender taken care of - and then there were two ...
"This was without doubt the most satisfying result of the season so far. Once again Greg Corin provided the key match winning moment, but this was a victory for the whole team who were superb in the second half and each and every one of them played their part in a great win."
RJC boss Sam Rosenthal disagreed with Garbacz's synopsis. He responded: "We were the better team, full-stop. Their keeper was outstanding, probably their best player. We should've put the game to bed in the first half. We were forced to make two first-half subs which killed us against their three fresh legs during the second half.
"I'm not sure what the 'mouth' comment was from Garbacz - they are a good group of lads although sadly it seems with a very classless manager. Credit to them. We now have to hope for a slip up."
Garbacz said: "The 'mouth' comment was not meant to be derogatory - it's just that they were pretty noisy which is fine . The ref himself actually felt the need to send Sam off from the touch line so clearly I wasn't the only one who thought so. Anyway it wouldn't be Hendon/Redbridge if I didn't upset the opposition manager so that's life I suppose."
