You may have seen a recent Barclays advert saying: “Why not get our day-to-day savings accounts, allowing you to withdraw money from a cash machine whenever you want it?” Now although the offer is at a pitiful rate of 4% interest, Barclay’s does have a point. To many people, the idea of 24/7 access to cash is appealing. However, you can do this but at an better rate than Barclay’s. The Yorkshire Building Society Internet Saver has an optional cash card, which, at a rate of 6 per cent, allows unlimited free cash-machine withdrawals from any Link ATM (all bank-based cash machines) of up to £250 a day. Alternatively, if you do not need access to your money, you can earn a better interest rate with Icelandic bank Kaupthing’s edge account, which pays 6.5 per cent as long as you have over £1,000 in the account. Don’t worry that it is Icelandic. It is a UK-registered subsidiary, meaning the first £35,000 you have in there is protected.
