The UK's Wonder Women

With International Women’s Day on March 8, attractions around the country are celebrating girl power this month, from political activists to cultural stars and inspirational women from history.

The Museum of Liverpool is holding a series of free events from March 4-11, including Women at Sea on pioneering female sailors, plus talks from the women behind online magazine Gal-Dem on championing the writing of women of colour as well as creative workshops. www.liverpoolmuseums.org.uk

Or follow in the footsteps of Kathleen Brown, a Newcastle suffragette, with a free city walk exploring her life. The tour on March 8 looks at the places where she demonstrated and was imprisoned, as well as the suffragette movement in Newcastle, before a Blue Plaque is unveiled in her honour. www.newcastlegateshead.com

And in Manchester, Wonder Women is part of the countdown to next year’s 100th anniversary of women first winning the right to vote, with exhibitions, events and tours across the city until March 12. Led by the People’s History Museum and Creative Tourist, the string of events includes a free guided tour of the museum on March 8, looking at how social justice campaigners Esther Roper and Eva Gore-Booth worked to bring about equal rights for working class women.

T-Rex returns

The dinosaurs are invading west London next month, before heading out to rampage across the country for the rest of the year — all as part of new animatronic experience, Jurassic Kingdom. A total of 30 models and installations will be appearing in various parks, starting with the grounds of Osterley House in London.

Visitors can see a triceratops with its young and a diplodocus towering 16 metres up among the trees. A screeching pterosaur takes to the skies, a spitting pachycephalosaurus defends itself and l ast but never least, an 18 metre Tyrannosaurus Rex proves why it’s still the fearsome king.

Jurassic Kingdom opens on April 1 before touring the country until October, including stops in Bristol, Manchester, Blackpool, Glasgow, Newcastle, Leeds and Birmingham. Tickets cost from £11.50 for adults and £9.50 for children. Three-year-olds and under go free.

Discover boutique Nottingham

From vintage to vinyl, books to boutiques, it’s now easier to discover some of Nottingham’s best independent shops with the launch of a new trail.

Available as a free Guidigo app or a pocket-sized fold-out map from the tourist information centre, the ‘Hidden’ trail picks out 10 areas in the city centre.

From the buzzing Old Market Square and quieter Cobden Chambers in Hockley to the West End Arcade, the trail takes you past the cheese and beer of Flying Horse Walk, the Victorian music hall on St James’s Street and the Anglo-Saxon heart of the city at the Lace Market, along with enough clothes boutiques to refill your wardrobe. www.experiencenottinghamshire.com/
