Skiing in France gets easier, San Diego celebrates and why you might like a phone-free break

articlemain

If you’re planning winter on the slopes, new flight routes to Grenoble are making it easier to explore the French Alps this season, including Alpe d’Huez and Les Deux Alpes, along with around 20 other resorts across the Isere region of France.

From December, Thomas Cook, Jet2 and Wizz Air are all introducing more flights from the UK to Grenoble Alpes Isere airport — the first flight of the season takes off on November 29, with the main departures beginning on December 15 as more resorts open.

Thomas Cook and Jet2 will both be flying from Birmingham, with the former also departing from Gatwick and Wizz Air from Luton. Prices start from £83 return and all routes end on April 6, 2019.

Celebrate San Diego's birthday

Next year marks the 250th anniversary of the founding of San Diego — so if you’ve ever fancied a California city break beyond Los Angeles and San Francisco, now’s the time to plan one, with new hotel openings and other events to celebrate.

The InterContinental San Diego opened last month on the waterfront, with floor-to-ceiling windows in the 400 guest rooms, while the stylish Moxy San Diego is opening in the Gaslamp Quarter in November, a new addition from the Marriott group.

Or head to Little Italy from next month for Carte Hotel & Suites San Diego, with a state-of-the-art spa, plus some of the city’s best restaurants, plus museums and galleries nearby.

Going phone free

Would you trade your phone for some extra luxury? Wyndham Grand is creating a series of new VIP areas at its pools and restaurants, at five of its US-based hotels, with extra perks… if you don’t check your phone while you do it.

The brand is helping guests to unplug until November 12 in these phone-free zones, which have  off-menu treats plus Reward Points and other prizes to win, as part of a collaboration with Yondr, which creates locking phone cases.

The hotels include Wyndham Grand’s Orlando Bonnet Creek resort and Clearwater Beach resorts in Florida, the Chicago Riverfront hotel, and two others in Charleston and Texas.
