The best of the UK's travel news

From spooky thrills to wine and chocolate, here's best of what's coming up in the UK

The UK is gearing up for Halloween with some terrifyingly tempting events over the coming months — if you think you’re brave enough.

The new House of Horror in Brentwood, Essex promises to be so scary that visitors must sign a waiver before they’re allowed in to the 4D immersive experience, an abandoned house with actors bringing scenes from nightmare to life.

For more family-friendly phantasms, the Great York Ghost Search is back in the city from October 26 to November 2, with a twilight trail of glowing ghosts around the city courtesy of Visit York and The York Dungeon.

A set of 26 illuminated ghost lamps will be hidden in windows across York, with maps available from tourist information or to download from visityork.org/haunted. There are also 400 mini ceramic ghosts hidden in fiendishly clever locations along the search route for anyone who finds them — including 50 prize-winning special edition orange versions

Or in Glasgow, the Halloween Light Show will be taking place in the Botanic Gardens between October 27 and November 11 — seven extra nights have been added after 30,000 tickets sold for the original dates. The new outdoor experience lasts around 90 minutes and promises to surprise rather than scare.

Wine garden of England

Some of Kent’s best wine producers will be hosting a new celebration of wine at Rochester Cathedral — almost a millennium after its 11th century bishop made a name for himself as Kent’s first winemaker.

The event, on November 17, has been organised by Biddenden, Domain Evremond, Chapel Down, Hush Heath Estate, Gusbourne, Squerreys and Simpsons Wine Estate, along with the cathedral, featuring tastings and talks.

Six months of chocolate

Chocoholics are in for a treat as the Fantastical Chocolate Festival prepares to start its tour of the UK, from October 13 to April 21, 2019, featuring artisan chocolatiers, giant chocolate eggs, fountains and fondues, ice cream, bubble waffles, candyfloss flowers and more.

Willy Wonka-inspired characters will provide entertainment for kids, including a chocolate factory play zone and egg decorating, while grown-ups can discover the alcoholic chocolate on offer.

Dates are currently scheduled for Liverpool, Birmingham, Bournemouth, Oxford, Leicester, Southampton, Cheltenham, Bristol, Manchester, London among others
