In the same handsome crescent that houses the Western Marble Arch Synagogue, a gorgeous boutique hotel has arisen.

Part of the Pride of Britain consortium, it opened less than a year ago with 82 rooms built within a run of seven listed Georgian buildings and a pair of mews houses. Original features have been retained, but a contemporary vibe prevails in the public areas.

Room decor is sumptuous with lovely wallpapers and luxurious bathrooms. Nice touches include an in-room Nespresso machine and Jing teas. In-room entertainment comprises a full Sky package, a DVD player with a film library featuring the Best Oscar movie for each of the past 50 years, and an iPod dock.

Downstairs, if you can tear yourself away from the British art, Hunter 486 (those old enough will remember as the telephone prefix for Marylebone) is an excellent asset. There's not just the Martini Library and bar, but a good restaurant serving all-day food. Grilled line-caught fish is available, and the observant will also welcome the eggplant parmigiana and fish pie simmering in the wood-fired oven this winter.Breakfast was marred only by a teapot containing a sad, solitary bag - hotels savvy enough to have discovered Jing should be serving proper leaf tea, or at least a second tea-bag on the side.
