Around 45 minutes from Phuket International Airport lies Kamala Beach, a stretch of sand almost two miles long, where the five-star Twinpalms MontAzure hotel faces directly west onto some glorious sunset views.
With 46 luxurious one and two bedroom suites, including seven penthouses and pool suites with their own private pool, this is a distinctly upmarket experience, designed for couples of families with older children to enjoy sun, sand and sea in peace and quiet.
My suite overlooked the ocean, at this time of year pleasantly noisy, with crashing waves – all rooms have balconies with either sea, pool or mountain views and are surrounded by lush palms for added privacy. Watching the sun set with a cocktail in my hand from one of my two balconies was a perfect end to the day.
As there were no mosquitoes and it wasn’t so warm that I needed air conditioning, I could even keep the windows open during the night to hear the sea from my superking-sized bed.
Kitted out with soft 280 thread count cotton bed linen, goose-down duvet and pillows, there are also USB ports to charge your devices and free movies streamed to the 55 inch and 43 inch flat screen TVs.
As well as the bedroom, there’s a separate living area and a fully stocked kitchenette including Nespresso machine and tea-making facilities. In the bathroom, twin basins and both rain-head and hand-held showers.
In August the sea itself was almost too rough to swim - although from December to March, it’s like a mill pond - but you'll find two swimming pools. The Lagoon pool between the hotel buildings is 30 metres long, perfect for laps.
Or right by the sea at beach level is the triangular infinity pool, with shallow and deep sections, both with bar service to the loungers.
As well as the well-equipped gym and two massage pavilions offering massages on request, guests can also use the Palm Spa at sister hotel, Twinpalms Phuket, transported by the free shuttle service.
You’re even assigned a dedicated member of staff to attend to all your needs, without being intrusive - in-villa dining, cooking classes and private chefs can be arranged.
The ocean views from the beachfront restaurants are temptation enough to enjoy your meals overlooking the water, along with authentic Thai dishes plus international cuisines at the HQ Beach Club or options with an Asian twist at Shimmer.
