JC Stays: Iberostar Grand Hotel Portals Nous, Mallorca

This classy new five star designer hotel is for adults only and even has a Naughty Suite to prove it

articlemain

The five-star Iberostar Grand Hotel Portals Nous has been long in the making, partly because Dutch design guru, Marcel Wanders, needed to approve every detail.

The result? A distinctive modernist style with curved lines, embossed surfaces and bold shapes. Don’t get the idea that it’s cold and formal, rather it’s stylish yet comfortable, the white walls filling the space with light, offset by occasional splashes of colour.

Adults Only, this is for couples (or singles) wanting stylish luxury plus the added bonus of peace and quiet. There’s high-quality pampering too, whether in the spa or cocktail bar, and you even get your own personal butler to look after during your stay.

And among the 66 rooms are a handful of themed suites, each dedicated to a different activity — gaming, stargazing, heritage and spa. The Naughty Suite, meanwhile, is equipped with a circular bed, ceiling mirrors and its own pole dance area.

But even those without ceiling mirrors have USB power points, Nespresso machine, 48 inch satellite TV, Bvlgari toiletries in the bathroom and a pillow menu.

Set on its own sandy cove, the sea is so close that you fall asleep listening to the gentle rhythm of the waves.

Or there’s always the large outdoor swimming pool with its waterfall cascading down the length of the hotel and two-level terrace for sun lounging. A couple of floors down is the luxurious spa for more relaxation, with your pick of various holistic health and beauty therapies.

Back at beach level, the Astir restaurant has its own terrace looking out onto the blues of the Mediterranean, with Spanish specialities on the menu while breakfasts feature a miniature glass showcase to your table, packed with individual croissants, cakes and mousses.

More restaurants and bars await on the sophisticated Puerto Portals Marina, around 15 minutes’ walk away, where the rich moor their yachts and a market takes place at sunset. If do you crave the ‘big’ city, Palma is a bus or short taxi ride away.

Happily, there’s no real need to go anywhere else unless you do develop itchy feet. The high standard of service here, the equally high quality of the food and some indulgent pampering in the spa all made me very loath to leave.
