Hilton

Manchester

If you want a spectacular aerial view of Manchester, you have only to go to the Hilton Manchester Deansgate and take the express lift to the 23rd floor.

When the doors open you'll be in, or rather on, Cloud 23, the hotel's buzzy cocktail bar. Wrap-around floor-to-ceiling windows provide jaw-dropping views while you sip something exotic from an extensive drinks menu.

More than a bar, Cloud 23 is popular within the Jewish community for Simchas as the space can accommodate up to 200 guests. In fact, smart weddings and barmitzvahs are regular events at the hotel, which can cater for up to 600 guests.

My spacious, 21st-floor executive room, which had a view that was almost as spectacular, came with high-speed internet access and a plasma-screen TV, as well as a vast and comfortable bed. The well-equipped bathroom had a tub, power-shower, robe and a nice range of toiletries. If you order room service though, be aware that there's a £3.50 delivery charge.

Guests staying in executive rooms may use the Executive Lounge, which serves a Continental breakfast and all-day complimentary drinks and snacks, with free internet access.

I opted for the excellent buffet breakfast in the Podium restaurant, which included veggie sausages, fresh fruit and all kinds of eggs.

There are also excellent amenities including a smart indoor swimming pool, fitness and spa centre.

For a city-centre hotel, it also offers something rare: an overall sense of peace and tranquillity.
