Come From Away picked up four Olivier Awards, including best new musical, during Sunday night’s ceremony at Royal Albert Hall.

The musical, written by husband-and-wife Irene Sankoff and David Hein, also won for choreography, sound design and outstanding achievement in music.

Come From Away uses real-life testimony from passengers and crew who were stranded in the small Canadian town of Gander in the aftermath of 9/11. Edgware Chabad rabbi Leivi Sudak is one of the characters portrayed in a moving, multi-faith prayer scene.

Producer Michael Rubinoff, who first conceived of the idea for the show, tweeted that he was “overwhelmed by all the well wishes” the team had received following the win.

Ms Sankoff and Mr Hein’s previous work includes My Mother’s Lesbian Jewish Wiccan Wedding and Mitzvah, a coming-of-age musical featuring klezmer and Jewish liturgical music.

At Sunday's ceremony, costume designer Catherine Zuber also won for her work on The King and I. It is the first Olivier for British-born Ms Zuber, who has previously won seven Tony Awards.

Matthew Lopez’s The Inheritance took home the trophy for best new play. The two-part epic about the legacy of the Aids epidemic also featured winner Kyle Soller as Eric Glass, a gay Jewish political activist.

The revival of Stephen Sondheim’s Company, which stars Patti Lupone and reimagines the lead as a woman, also won four awards.
