Toumarkin joins Nevo on podium at Euro swimming Championships

articlemain

Israel's squad has returned from the European Swimming Championships in London with two silver medals.

Yakov Toumarkin finished runner-up in the 200m backstroke. He touched home in 1: 56.97 and narrowly missed out on another medal, finishing fourth in the 100m backstroke.

Toumarkin has returned to form in time for the Olympics, having only previously won major medals at the Euros in Hungary four years ago.

"This gives me great strength and confidence ahead of Rio,” he said. “I'm also encouraged by the fact that I stood on the podium after recording a time just short of my record."

Like Toumarkin, Gal Nevo Israel's other medal winner in London overcame disappointment in his first competition, finishing sixth in the 100m in the Individual Medley, to finish second in the 200m in 1:56.97.

Nevo said: "This has really boosted my confidence for Rio where I think I'm capable of reaching a final." He also finished seventh in the 400m IM.

Amit Ivri, Ziv Kalontarov, Zohar Shikler and Andrea Murez will join Toumarkin and Nevo in the swimming competition at the Olympics.
