Dmitry Salita will get his long-awaited world title shot against Amir Khan if Britain's WBA light-welterweight champion gets his way.

Khan's promoter Frank Warren has been in talks with Jewish fighter Salita's management team about a December fight in Britain and the Bolton fighter said: "I'd like to fight him.

"He's the number one contender and I think he's the ideal fight for me at this moment in time."

Khan will be making the first defence of the title he won from the Ukraine's Andreas Kotelnik, who twice pulled out of agreed defences against 27-year-old Salita, once through injury and once because he as not happy with the financial terms.

The new champion, eager to raise his profile in the USA, sees a win over the unbeaten Brooklyn-based, Belarus-born Salita, who has been based in the States for his entire 30-fight professional career, as a route to achieving that aim.

"I want to build my name up in America, so this is a fight to target, said Khan who expects Salita to grasp the opportunity.

"If they really want the fight - and I'm giving Salita a chance to fight for my title - I think he should grab that with both hands.

"He might never get that chance again and I think it will be a big fight," added the 22-year-old champion.
