Shahar Peer suffered a shock second round elimination at the hands of Angelique Kerber on Wednesday afternoon.

Having accounted for former world No. 1 Ana Ivanovic in the opening round, the 13th seed from Israel succumbed in straight sets against the German on Court 5.

In their first meeting, Peer quickly took control of the first set, breaking Kerber’s serve to take the first set 6-3in under 30 minutes. However, the German rallied in the second set, taking advantage of a double fault and sent a lob deep to the backhand to break the Israeli’s serve in the opening game. Kerber broke again to lead 4-1.

Peer battled three break points before taking Kerber’s serve to make it 4-2; only for the German to break straight back to win the second set 6- 3.

In obvious discomfort, Shahar called for a trainer and a medical time out was called as her thigh and lower back were manipulated and her thigh rebound on court.

Despite losing the first two games of the final set Shahar showed great tenacity and determination with a display of scintillating tennis, constantly attacking aggressively until she broke back after a lengthy deuce to level 2-2. However, after a disputed line call which gave Kerber 4-2. Although she handled a dubious call in a resigned calm manner her game lost its some momentum and despite some heavy hitting baseline battles she lost the final set 6-4 in a match lasting nearly two hours.
