After last week’s battling performance, London Lions fell back to Earth with a bump this weekend, losing 6-0 away to Holmer Green in the Buckinghamshire countryside.

The Lions had been able to field a team of experienced heads the previous week, but many of these were missing for this match and youthful exuberance was unfortunately no match for the hard running of the Holmer Green team, whose pacy right winger caused problems for the Lions’ rearguard from the start.

A cross from the right wing after 10 minutes unsettled the Lions defence and goalkeeper Dan Lee was beaten at the far post.

Two more goals followed in the half, on 30 and 44 minutes respectively, and despite the efforts of Max Kyte, Jon Kurrant and James Gershfield to spark the Lions attack into action the team were already facing an uphill task.

The Lions came out strongly in the second half and Kurrant’s left wing cross was narrowly missed by both Kyte and Sam Shooter.

However, Holmer Green re-established their dominance with a fourth strike and the Lions’ task was rendered impossible with James Belchak’s dismissal for two bookable offences midway through the second half.

Ricky Engleman did his best to close down the Holmer Green midfield, but the home team exploited their numerical advanage to the fullest and two further goals in the second half took the scoreline to 6-0.
