A first-half penalty from West Ham’s Andre Ayew separated the teams.

Grant said: “I am happy for the three points, but know we can play better. The result is more important than everything in a competition like this.”

The Israeli revealed he has parted with his “lucky” blue shirt which saw Ghana reach the final in 2015 before losing to Ivory Coast on penalties. “My wife says the shirt is ugly and I’m not superstitious.”

Grant is stepping down after the competition and he hopes a good performance in Gabon will help him secure a return to club football.
