A deadly double from Motti Colman inspired England FC to a hard-fought victory over Ashdod in a feisty affair.

A 3-1 win helped England leapfrog their rivals who were initially on the back-foot against their French opposition.

England keeper Roy Meron was the star man early on, producing a number of top saves to keep the game scoreless.

His efforts were rewarded when England broke the deadlock against the run of play - a good passing move down the left saw Yonni Shelmerdine poke the ball into an unguarded net after a dangerous ball across the face of goal.

Colman, England's captain for the night, was still reeling from a strong challenge minutes earlier, but he managed to double the lead with a phenomenal effort - the central midfielder took the ball on the half volley and with the outside of his foot hit a rocket from 40 yards out.

Ashdod continued to press after the break and their pressure paid off when they were awarded a penalty following a defensive mix-up. Mike Grab-Smid converted the spot-kick and the visitors kicked on.

The next goal was crucial and Colman grabbed his second of the night with an individual effort reminiscent of Gazza’s goal against Scotland atEuro ’96.

After England’s third goal the game turned nasty and players from both teams were cautioned. The game ended with Ashdod being awarded another penalty, but Meron continued his outstanding form by saving the spot-kick.

England now turn their focus to the cup semi-final with Jerusalem which takes place on Tuesday.
