On Monday, a group of judges picked the winning doughnut flavour which will be made by Carmelli's this Chanukah.

Simeon Simberg beat more than 400 creative cooks when his Madagascan dark chocolate and orange flavour doughnut was chosen in the competition run by the United Syngagogue in conjunction with the JC and Carmelli's.

The finalist flavours were lemon meringue pie; sweet cheese; salted caramel, chocolate fudge and Lotus biscuits; mango and passion fruit cream and (a very close second) crème brûlée.

A few of the more creative ideas that didn't make the final six ranged from the more outlandish, cholent and shmaltz herring suggestions to the colourful 'rainbowkiah' doughnut. A very glrlie candy floss unicorn doughnut with marshmallow fluff for the tail also didn't make the final cut.

Simberg's choc orange doughnut will be on sale at Carmelli's throughout Chanukah, as will the crème brûlée flavour.
