At least one branch of Morrisons has stocked matzah unsuitable for Passover in its Passover section, as the UK’s leading authority overseeing Jewish dietary laws issue a warning to be on the lookout for errant Matzahs.
In footage disseminated amongst the Stamford Hill Charedi community earlier this week, an individual approaches a section in the Stamford Hill branch of Morrisons named “Prepare for Passover”, and zooms in on one of the boxes that clearly reads “Not for Passover use”.
Kosher London Beth Din (KLBD), the UK Jewish community’s leading authority on kosher produce, issued an alert on Thursday that read: “It has come to our attention that some supermarkets have included year-round kosher products in their ‘Kosher for Passover’ section which are NOT kosher for Pesach.”
Without mentioning Morrisons by name, they said supermarkets are stocking the “year-round blue boxes of Rakusen’s Matzos” instead of the version in a red box, which are suitable for Passover.
KLBD noted that they have “no control over the stocking of supermarket shelves. We recommend that when purchasing from any non-supervised establishment you check every item to make sure it has a reliable kosher l’Pesach hechsher.”
A Morrisons spokesperson told the JC: "This was an isolated issue in only one store and it has now been rectified."
Passover this year falls on April 22-30.
