YOU CALL THAT A DEBATE?
Oxford JSoc rep Ben Goldstein has found an impressive platform for his public speaking career. The 19-year-old RSY-Netzernik is one of eight people chosen to represent Oxford at the World University Debating Competition in Chennai, India. According to Ben: “Jews notoriously love a good argument, and it’s even better when you get to do it with the best people in the world. I can’t wait.”
JUDAISM FOR DUMMIES
Chabad Islington kicked off its six-week ‘Judaism for Dummies’ course last week, giving attendees a crash course on all things Jewish. Weekly topics include synagogue, Shabbat, holidays, tefillin, mezuza, keeping kosher – and, presumably, the mystical healing properties of grandma’s chicken soup.
DINNER'S ON DUMBLEDORE
A Harry Potter-themed meal at Birmingham JSoc saw the preparation of a Shabbat spread fit for Hagrid. Muggles feasted on Ron’s rice and Dumbledore’s sweet potato pie. According to student Ashleigh Sapier: “It was the best food they ever made!”
COME SIT WITH KUMZITS
Manchester Kumzits held its monthly dinner last Friday. Derived from the Yiddish words “Come” and “Sit”, Kumzits brings students together around a campfire to sing songs and wind down from essay-deadline meltdown, before serving up a three-course feast. According to organiser Sophie Lipton: “It’s another way of exploring one’s Judaism at university, through a relaxed, alternative dinner.”
