In the world of Jewish education and community engagement, there are few experiences more rewarding than witnessing young people reconnecting with their Jewish identity, and discovering a love and passion for things that matter to them. Over the years, Aish UK has had the privilege of being with countless individuals as they go on such journeys. But among all the milestones we celebrate, none is as poignant or meaningful as the moment when these journeys culminate under the chupah. Such moments are a reminder of why Aish UK exists in the first place – to foster connection, commitment and love in a world that feels increasingly disconnected.
Today, young Jews face countless pressures and distractions that can pull them away from their identity as Jews and our community. In a climate where being Jewish often feels fraught, Aish UK strives to create moments of joy, meaningful engagement and belonging. These moments – ultimately leading to the creation of new Jewish homes – are at the heart of why we do what we do. Take for example, the story of a student who discovered Aish in the most unexpected way, through a summer trip to South Africa. That trip introduced her to lifelong friends and mentors. Her Jewish journey flourished as she engaged with Aish’s programming, eventually meeting a wonderful Israeli man who shares her values and dedication to Jewish growth. Last month, the two celebrated their wedding in Israel and the young couple honoured us with the privilege of hosting their sheva brachot. To see someone’s journey come full circle, from a chance encounter to the joy of building another new Jewish home, is profoundly moving.
Another story shows the power of real connection. A student at a non-Jewish school met an Aish rabbi at a lunch and learn, sparking an interest in his heritage that he hadn’t explored before. That spark grew into a passion for learning and self-discovery, as he participated in Aish programming and trips. As he moved into young adulthood, he maintained a close relationship with Aish, drawing strength and inspiration from his mentors. Last month, he got engaged, ready to embark on a new chapter as a mature, committed, incredibly knowledgeable Jew. His story exemplifies the ripple effect of meaningful connection – how a single moment can lead to a lifetime of growth.
These stories are not just anecdotes; they are the heart and soul of what Aish UK does every day. They remind us love is not merely a fleeting emotion but a deep, enduring commitment to connection, growth and building something greater than oneself. In a world that often prioritises convenience and superficiality, Aish UK stands as a beacon of authenticity, advocating for real connection, real meaning and real love.
The journeys we witness – from initial curiosity to the profound commitment of building a Jewish home – are a testament to the power of our mission. These journeys remind us that while the challenges facing young Jews today are significant, so too are the opportunities. By creating spaces for connection, learning and growth, Aish UK empowers young people to embrace their identity and build a future filled with purpose, meaning and love.
As we celebrate the theme of love in this supplement, we at Aish UK are filled with gratitude for the countless journeys we’ve been part of. Each story, each milestone and each chupah remind us why we do what we do. Because at its core, Aish is about love – love for our heritage, love for our people and love for the future world we are building together.
