Sir Alan Sugar is not exactly one to buy into the Hello!-style celebrity culture. But when it comes to marking an important moment in his life, he certainly knows how to party, as these photos exclusive to the Jewish Chronicle reveal.

The 61-year-old star of The Apprentice threw a spectacular bash to celebrate 40 years of marriage to his wife, Ann. Former Daily Mirror editor Piers Morgan, ex-Arsenal vice-chairman David Dein and actress Maureen Lipman were among the 250 guests who attended the black-tie event in a marquee at the Sugars’ Chigwell home.

Bruce Forsyth hosted a cabaret that included a one-hour set from Sir Elton John, chauffeured in by helicopter; a stand-up comedy routine by Jackie Mason; and a performance from the 58-strong cast of the musical Jersey Boys. Mr Forsyth caused much merriment when plucking out random people from the crowd to dance with, and did not recognise Maureen Lipman. But it was a recital of an Elton John song by one of Sir Alan’s seven grandchildren that stole the show.
