Ian Selwyn has told his Leeds Maccabi players to ‘take it on the chin’ after being handed a brutal battering by Queenswood Social FC.

Maccabi crashed out of the Leeds Sunday Alliance Premier Division Cup after conceding six times without reply in a nightmare first half.

Queenswood, boasting an array of new signings from a recently folded semi-professional side, were simply unstoppable as they tore Maccabi to shreds.

After taking the lead in the first minute thanks to a sensational 20-yard volley, the home side never looked back as they completely outplayed a patchwork Maccabi side.

Missing captain Richard Black as well as the likes of Adam Gilman and Marcus Edge, Maccabi struggled to compete in the opening 45 minutes.

And despite improving after the break with Tim Zoltie grabbing a consolation, Selwyn was left to reflect on a devastating defeat.

“We were well and truly beaten by the better side and I can’t say the scoreline was unfair,” said Selwyn.

“But we have to take this defeat on the chin and move on because we’ve still got a lot to play for.

“We’ve got three league games left and if we win them all, then we’ll be in with a great chance of winning the title.

“Queenswood were by far the better team and deserved to win. They’re a good side and have already stated they will be leaving our league next season.

“The lads improved after the break and showed some spirit so that was encouraging.”

Maccabi are currently six points off top spot with a game in hand and face current leaders Waggon Athletic in their penultimate game of the season.

Before that, they take on second place New Ireland Wood in what has become a must win game for both sides.

“We need to get over this defeat because New Ireland Wood will be another very tough game,” added Selwyn.

“We’ve got three games of the season left and it’s important we give it everything and try to win the title.”
