The top-ranked Israeli on the ATP circuit, Sela, 34, says he is also considering retiring from the main tour.

Sela said: “This is perhaps my last year in tournament tennis and because of the physical pressures on my body, I’ve decided to focus on the ATP tour.

“After not missing an opportunity to represent the country in the past 14 years, I’ve decided not to be a part of the upcoming match against Turkey.”

The highlight of Sela’s Davis Cup career came in 2005 when he led Israel into the World Group semi-finals before losing to Spain.

Sela begins the year ranked 141, well below his highest ranking of 29 in 2009. His prospects do not look good after he slumped to defeat 7-5, 2-6, 4-6 to Colombia’s Daniel Galan (188) in the first round of the Canberra Challenger earlier this week.

Israel will now have to travel to Turkey next month in the Davis Cup with Edan Leshem (385) and Yshai Oliel (398).

Julia Glushko, 30, has announced her retirement due to recurring injuries. She earned a career best ranking of 79 in 2014.
