There has been speculation this week that the Premier League is considering the introduction of a playoff system to determine the fourth club to qualify for the Champions League.
There is nothing more exciting than a playoff and I suggest it is something that the MSFL adopts in a bid to keep the season alive. With two teams having folded from the Premier Division, league chairman David Wolff informed all clubs at a recent league meeting that there would be no relegation from the top-flight.
The teams towards the foot of the table breathed a huge sigh of relief but to avoid a situation where such teams are involved in dead-rubbers or have nothing to play for against title contenders towards the business end of the season, I would like to see some innovation and see the bottom team play the third-placed team in Division One. The chances are that with dwindling numbers, the league could be restructured over the summer. I realise that the committee are doing everything within their capabilities to squeeze fixtures in to ensure the season is completed in time, but it's definitely something worth considering.
Obviously there would be no money at stake but it would undoubtedly liven up the season and ensure that some teams don't go through the motions between now and May.
● Maccabi GB's Tenpin Bowling Committee have started the search for a new chairman and vice-chairman after Matthew Plax and Paul Loberman stepped down. The pair served on the committee for four years. A secretary and treasurer are also needed. Successful applicants will be involved in the planning and preparation of the 2011 European Maccabi Games, which will be taking place in Vienna, Austria, as well as the highly successful annual tournament. The closing date for applications is February 26.
● Maccabi GB have made their nominations for their Sports Awards in March. As well as seeing some familiar faces from the football world, it is refreshing to see some new names on the list. While all the nominees for the top two individual accolades are at the prime or early stages of their careers, don't forget the golden oldies. Roger Bruck won the Lifetime Achievement gong in 2008 and my tip for glory in March is swimmer Susan Halter.
● A Spurs fan alerted me to an amusing episode before kick-off at Bolton versus Spurs FA Cup tie at the Reebok. As the line-ups were displayed on the big screen, Israeli midfielder Tamir Cohen's was listed on the Bolton bench twice, as numbers 21 and 25. Although this was admitted as a mistake at the time by the announcer, a "Tamir Cohen - so good they picked him twice".
● Remember the name. Daniel Levene claimed a hat-trick of tries for Oxford against Cambridge at the Varsity match at Twickenham. Winger Daniel, who is from Albourne, near Brighton, is reading Geography at St. Peter's College, Oxford. Looks like England could do with him, at rugby or football!
