The Agudas Israel Housing Association (AIHA) has "big ideas" for developments in Barnet, according to chief executive Ita Symons.

Planning permission has been received to redevelop the Yamor House complex, near the junction of Golders Green Road and the North Circular.

Although the association is involved in other projects in the area, "this one is different in as much as it is our own", Mrs Symons said. "It's not through another housing association or developer."

The intention is to develop the site into a six-story residential block with 16 flats ranging from one-bedroom to four-bedrooms. Building work should be "well under way" within six months, Mrs Symons added, with completion in two years.

A separate synagogue for 250 worshippers will be built on the complex. Talks are said to be ongoing with the nearby Beis Hamedrash Ohr Chodosh over the possibility of the shul moving to the site. The congregation is led by Dayan Menachem Gelley, head of the London Beth Din. AIHA is also "actively involved with Barnet Council and Argent, who are the chosen developer for Brent Cross regeneration", Mrs Symons said.

"There will be about 400 houses for shared ownership within the regeneration project."

The association's traditional base within the Stamford Hill community is not being neglected, although those seeking larger houses may have to head for the new enclave in the Thames Estuary. Mrs Symons said AIHA plans to buy some "large family units" in Canvey Island.
