Hmmm. Frank Dobson is against 42 days. (He was on the Today programme mouthing off). I guess that points to it being a sensible, sagacious, important measure.
And now this:
The government is expected to offer a last-minute compensation deal to help push the 42-day detention plan through. Under this, any suspect held for more than 28 days and later not charged could receive £3,000 for each extra day in custody, the BBC has learned.
That's 42 grand. Blimey. It's been a tough few months. We've had the bedroom and kitchen painted, the garden smartened and all sorts of other expenses. I could do with the extra cash. I'd spend a fortnight away from home, free meals, no charge at the end of it, for £42,000. Perhaps West Midland Police will help me out?
