Last year’s Shabbat UK was one of the Chief Rabbi’s most noteworthy early successes. But, for all the numbers involved, there was a feeling that this was an event primarily for United Synagogue members. It is encouraging that in his piece for us this week Chief Rabbi Mirvis appears to recognise this, emphasising that “Shabbat UK” is for everyone . If the idea is to become an annual fixture and be celebrated across the community, it needs to be genuinely inclusive and draw in Jews of all denominations and even those who would normally never venture near a synagogue.
